What is your role in the industry? What does your organisation do?
At D4Drivers, we’re all about championing driver health and well-being. As the UK’s leading provider of driver medicals, we conduct around 10,000 medicals each month, working closely with some of the biggest names in the industry. We’ve recently partnered with Loughborough University to carry out the largest independent study on driver health. The aim? To ensure professional drivers can enjoy healthier, happier careers and make driver health a central part of what makes road transport successful.
Why are you and/or your organisation getting involved in National Lorry Week 2024?
National Lorry Week shines a light on the vital work HGV drivers do to keep our country running smoothly. Our involvement is all about recognising and celebrating drivers, while ensuring they can access the support and services they need to thrive. By taking part, we hope to reach new drivers and help those currently on the road stay there safely, by making essential medical services and certifications easier to access.
Why is it important to celebrate the road transport industry?
Road transport impacts everyone, from the food we buy to the supplies our hospitals rely on. National Lorry Week is a chance to acknowledge the dedication of drivers and operators who work tirelessly to keep our shelves stocked and our businesses thriving. It’s all about recognising their hard work and understanding just how important they are to our day-to-day lives.
Are there any misconceptions about road transport that you would like to put right?
A big misconception is that driving doesn’t require top physical health. In reality, good health is crucial for professional drivers. The road can be demanding, and improvements in health support, from medical check-ups to lifestyle changes, should be welcomed and embraced.
What issues must we raise awareness about in road transport, and why are they important?
Drivers’ well-being and safety are our top priorities. Long hours on the road can be tough, both physically and mentally, so health support is vital. Raising awareness about the health requirements and support available for HGV drivers helps to keep them safe and in good condition for the road.
On the 10th anniversary of National Lorry Week, what excites you about the future of road transport?
The road transport industry has a bright future, with exciting developments in eco-friendly technology, improved facilities, and innovations in driver safety, wellbeing support and training. At D4Drivers, we’re thrilled to keep supporting drivers as they take on these changes, making sure they stay healthy, happy, and ready to lead the way forward in transport.
