Transaid is the chosen charity for the transport and logistics industry, transforming lives through safe, available and sustainable transport. The charity’s HGV ‘Train the Trainer’ model is central to their mission of improving road safety across the globe, and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where road crashes are the third highest cause of death. We speak to the charity’s Head of Fundraising, Florence Bearman, for National Lorry Week.

Why are you getting involved in National Lorry Week?

National Lorry Week provides an important opportunity to raise awareness of the critical nature of the industry. By being involved with this, Transaid can show support for many of the individuals and companies, past and present, who have supported us in such a dedicated fashion.

Why do you think it’s important to celebrate the road transport industry?

The road transport industry is critical to the economy of our country, and in the fulfilment of key services. The hard work and dedication shown throughout the industry is rarely celebrated – National Lorry Week is an excellent opportunity to do so.

Why should people get involved?

People should get involved to celebrate and raise awareness of this all-important industry. Without our lorries, people wouldn’t get their food, drinks, clothing or medicines, so it’s important we recognise and shine light on the role they play in our everyday lives.

What do you find exciting about road transport?

It’s a hugely dynamic industry and ultimately, it’s a people business.

Could you tell us a bit more about Transaid?

At Transaid, we work hard to ensure that no driver leaves for a day’s work with the fear they may not come home due to lack of training, or dangerous vehicles or roads.

Road deaths are a public health crisis that is often overlooked in many African countries. We want to change that.
