For National Lorry Week, we speak to Phil Moon, Marketing Manager of DAF, the UK market’s leading manufacturer of lorries. Around a third of lorries on our roads are made by DAF, and their trucks are built right here in the UK at their factory in Leyland.

DAF have kindly provided the lorry for this year’s roadshow – a New Generation DAF XG.

Why are you getting involved in this year’s National Lorry Week?

As part of the industry, we all know how vital road transport is. National Lorry Week is an opportunity for us to share that message with a wider audience; it’s crucial that people learn to appreciate the hard work that goes into delivering the goods we all depend upon.

We want people to think about the logistics and planning that goes into making sure goods are where we want them, when we need them. Too often this is ignored, overlooked or simply underappreciated.

Keeping road transport in the public eye for the right reasons is a never-ending task, so let’s work together to get the message out there on a much greater scale.

What do you find exciting about the industry?

Road transport is such a fantastic and varied industry to work in. From specialists like technicians, logisticians, drivers and vehicle designers, to the many more generic roles that every sector needs, such as sales, marketing, human resources, and training… the list goes on. There are a huge variety of careers on offer at all levels within the transport and logistics sector, which often goes under the radar.

What might the future of the industry look like?

The next decade will be transitional in terms of the shift to zero emission technology, and that will have a massive impact on networks and operations. Exciting times to come!
