blog -

We speak to Ian Jones, Director of Backhouse Jones, expert legal advisors to the transport sector. Backhouse Jones is uniquely industry specific, which explains why they advise most of the major operators in the UK in addition to RHA members and many smaller, family-owned businesses.

Why are you getting involved in this year’s National Lorry Week?

We’re very proud to sponsor this year’s National Lorry Week. Road transport is the life blood of the UK, with 89% of all our goods transported by land; and even the 11% not moved by road often requires haulage for the journey to be completed.

Road transport is often the unsung national hero. A staggering 2.54 million people work in transport and logistics with 600,000 individuals holding a goods vehicle driving licence. Surely that’s something to celebrate.

Why do you think people should consider joining the industry?

Once part of the sector, individuals rarely leave. It has a great amount of variety. If you are a driver, you get the opportunity to travel. If you are based on-site or at the head office of an operator then each working day is full of interesting challenges, no two days are the same. Why wouldn’t you want to be part of something great?

What kind of careers does the industry offer?

The industry offers a wide variety of careers for men and women of all ages – including driving, engineering, planning and management, so there really is something for everyone.

What excites you about the future of road transport?

Many things, but the way in which alternative fuels like hydrogen may be used in road transport going forward is exciting. Trucks today are also really sophisticated with a full range of technical advances. It’s a really great time to join the industry.
