Field to Fork: the journey of British Sugar

blog -

During our National Lorry Week roadshow we set out to highlight the journey of sugar from the field to the fork.

This saw our National Lorry Week truck collecting sugar beet from the farm and following it along the supply chain and into the shops.

Field to Fork showcases the extensive work that happens behind the scenes and celebrates the large number of businesses and people who are involved in stocking supermarket shelves with our favourite sweet treats.

Martin Dean, our Key Account Manager, took the specially liveried DAF XG, and a camera crew, to Cambridgeshire, where a large proportion of the UK’s sugar beet is grown.

He travelled more than a thousand miles during the week, transporting various trailers on behalf of RHA members, including raw sugar beet from the farm, a tanker full of granulated sugar and a wagon of packaged and palleted sugar ready for the retailer.

The initiative is supported by businesses from across the supply chain, including Roger Warnes Transport, Knowles Transport, Abbey Logistics, British Sugar and Asda.

Day 3: Transporting packaged sugar to Asda’s distribution centre

Day 4: Delivering bulk sugar to Hill Biscuits on behalf of Abbey Logistics

Martin said: “It just goes to show how vitally important these trucks and the people that drive them are to the supply chain.

“People might be surprised to hear that a lot of our sugar is grown, refined and packaged right here in the UK.

“We’ve delivered twenty-eight tonnes of bulk sugar into the factory in Ashton-under-Lyne for them to complete the process of manufacturing their biscuits.

“I hope that next time you pick up a bag of sugar or a packet of biscuits from the shelves of your local supermarket, you think about the long chain of people and businesses that have been involved in getting it there.”
